Author: Riley Sager
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS BOOK?
Believability and other issues aside, the short answer is yes.
TELL ME ABOUT IT ALREADY!
The last to see them, Emma was thirteen when the three girls went missing from Camp Nightingale. Fifteen years later, Emma struggles to cope with her feelings of guilt and the secrets she still keeps. When the wealthy owner of the camp, Franny, invites Emma back, she returns to Camp Nightingale with the intention of discovering the truth of what happened that summer.
I don’t have too much to say about this novel- it was a quick and mostly enjoyable read. Throughout this mystery, Riley Sager doles out clues smartly, leading to a final twist that honestly surprised me. However, there were a few things I didn’t like in this thriller. I never found the idea of Franny asking (and Emma agreeing to return to camp) believable, Emma makes consistently baffling choices and many of the other characters fell a little flat. I constantly found myself aware that the author is an adult male who, to the best of my knowledge, has never been a teenage girl.
Amazon Studios has picked The Last Time I Lied up as a limited series, and I think the story will benefit from being adapted into a visual medium. The setting of Camp Nightingale will translate beautifully to the screen, and maybe the cast can infuse a little more life into the characters. Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing it!
